What to make of the Russell Westbrook to LA rumor

It’s only a matter of time before the Los Angeles Lakers land a marquee free agent. The main reason is because they are too successful of a franchise to go stagnant for this long without the chance of landing a top superstar.

The two names to keep in mind? Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith was on ESPN 710 this past Friday explaining why he thinks Los Angeles is a huge possibility for landing Kevin Durant, and the reason is because of Russell Westbrook.

“Keep in mind this, one of the biggest reasons I’m told, that Kevin Durant may have the Lakers at the top of his list, is because the Lakers have been led to believe, by whom specifically I do not know, but the Lakers have been led to believe that it is a very good chance that the following year Russell Westbrook is coming….

“It’s a big possibility,” Smith said. “It’s a big possibility.”

There is just so much to make of this situation. First off, Kevin Durant would probably love to go to a large market like a New York or Los Angeles, but the Lakers look like they are still lost in finding their direction and it would still be a step back for Durant to go to Los Angeles with Westbrook. After Durant and Westbrook, the Lakers would still be at a disadvantage when it comes to their third, fourth, fifth best players etc. The Lakers could be looking for a new coach after this season, which could also hurt the chance of getting Kevin Durant, which could mean losing chances at both stars.

Right now, it is just too premature to figure out where each player is going to go. We all know Westbrook loves the thought of playing in Los Angeles, but is still feeling empty without bringing championship hardware to Oklahoma City. We all know Kevin Durant wants to bring a championship to Oklahoma City as well, but maybe they just don’t have the pieces he thinks they need to win. One thing we do know for sure is it will be a telling factor if one leaves, that the other may be following them out the door.
