Prior to the Toronto Raptors’ 96-92 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night, the team paid tribute to former Raptor and current Grizzlies guard Vince Carter. Carter spent six years with Toronto before being traded to the then New Jersey Nets 20 games into the 2004-05 season.
Despite having some of his best seasons as a pro with the Raptors, the perception of Carter in Toronto has been poor. Many fans labeled him as “immature,” and accused him of being a “quitter.” Initially, fans were ready to unleash the boo-birds yet again on Carter, but as the tribute started to roll, fans realized how special of a moment this was.
The tribute moved Carter to tears, and surely reminded fans of how great Carter was during his Toronto days. It’s great that the fans were able to develop a sense of appreciation for Carter, a player who single-handily put the Raptors on the map.
