J.R. Smith and LeBron James

J.R. Smith played with Chris Paul for one season in 2005-06 as members of the New Orleans Hornets. Smith played with Carmelo Anthony both in Denver and New York. He now plays alongside LeBron James in Cleveland.

In a column from Bleacher Report’s Howard Beck this week, one entitled Brotherhood that took a comprehensive look at the long-standing relationship between LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, LeBron was quoted as saying that he would take a pay cut to play with his closest friends — ‘Melo, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Paul.

If such a phenomenon were to occur, J.R. Smith wants parts.

From Peter Botte of the New York Daily News:

“That would be dope. That’d be sick,” Smith told the Daily News before the game. “I’d like to see it. I just hope they save me a spot and I’m on the team.”

After Paul, Wade, James, and Anthony, you can plug in just about anyone. Smith would be another loaded gun and an added luxury talent-wise. He’d likely be in a sixth man role.

Smith also spoke on Carmelo’s struggles in New York:

“I know it’s been hard on him,” said Smith, whose Cavs also will visit the Garden on Saturday. “It’s one of those situations when you’re a great player in the league and you just don’t have the support system, that cast that you’ve been accustomed to like when we were in Denver or the earlier years when he got to New York. I know it’s been a frustrating process, but if anybody can get through it, it will be Melo.

“And I know he absolutely wants to make it work here. This is everything he asked for, I mean, except for not making the playoffs and stuff like that. But everything he’s doing for the city and for the Knicks, I think it’s harder for him now more than anything. He doesn’t have the whole supporting cast yet, but this year has been better than last year and I think they will continue to improve. And the way I know him, he’s committed there, for sure.”

It would take some serious collapses and the right amount of luck for this monster squad to go from fantasy to possibility. My thing is, at this rate, it might take such an Avengers-style team up to combat what’s happening in Golden State. That could also be in the back of these guy’s minds. Out of all of the people involved in this scenario, James and Smith are currently in the best position to battle the Warriors. If it’s still not enough, we’ll see if desperate times call for the most desperate of measures.
