Trades during this time of year, the NBA Finals, is something of a rarity. People are focused on the last two teams standing and fighting for the 2015 NBA Championship.

Today,  the Milwaukee Bucks have traded PF Ersan Ilyasova to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for SF Caron Butler and PF Shawne Williams. Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the trade:

This is a good trade for the Detroit Pistons. I think they have lacked the presence of a stretch-four when they traded Jonas Jerebko to the Boston Celtics before the trade deadline. Ilyasova is a career 37% shooter from three point land. Free agency is looming for Greg Monroe so it will be interesting to see the combo of Ilyasova and Monroe if he were to stay.

For Milwaukee, they will be saving millions at the end of the day. They free up $5.8 million in cap space in preparation to offer a max contract to restricted free-agent Khris Middleton. Neither Butler’s nor Williams contracts are guaranteed. If they waive these contracts they will have around $22 million to spend this off-season.  Middleton paired with Jabari Parker and Giannis Antetokounmpo is a solid foundation for a successful future.
