It was reported earlier that Rondo would be willing to re-sign with Dallas long term, as he will be a free agent next summer. Things were back and forth about whether or not Rondo would still be a Celtic after this season, and now this makes for the biggest move of the season thus far.
The Celtics were key about receiving at least a first-round draft pick in exchange for Rondo. They got it. From a personnel standpoint, Brad Stevens can particularly make use of Brandan Wright and Jameer Nelson right away, but the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, and Rick Carlisle are the clear victors here.
Putting Rondo, who still leads the league in assists with 10.8 per game, next to Monta Ellis in the back court is much, much more dynamic than what they had before. Plus it should be fun to watch how Rondo and Dirk operate together.
The story of this trade is about Dallas. Adding Rondo is a tremendous upgrade for a team that’s 19-8 and currently at sixth place in the Western Conference.
