Current Memphis Grizzlies center and former Defensive Player of the Year Marc Gasol is slated to hit free agency this summer, and a slew of teams are sure to be interested in the 7-foot Spaniard. Amongst the intrigued squads are the New York Knicks, who are desperately seeking talent to fill out their barren roster, one that clinched the second worst record in the NBA this season.

New York is looking to flank superstar Carmelo Anthony with championship level talent as they hope to reach the Eastern Conference’s upper echelon within the next few years, and they believe Anthony, along with Gasol and a potential top-three pick in this year’s draft can accomplish that.

However Beno Udrih, a former New York Knick and a current teammate of Gasol’s, believes that the Knicks’ optimism regarding a Gasol signing this summer is all for naught, as he told Bleacher Report’s Jared Zwerling “they’re not going to get him.”

A report surfaced earlier this season that Gasol had already ruled out the Knicks in free agency, but nothing can be accepted as fact until things begin to transpire on the free agency front during the summer. Gasol doesn’t seem like the type to be concerned a great deal about dollar amount or markability (both will serve as centerpieces in most of New York’s pitches to free agents this summer,) as he’d much rather have a chance at contending for a championship. He’s been afforded that opportunity in Memphis, and signing with New York would place him on the opposite end of the contention spectrum.

The Grizzlies currently trail their second round series with the Golden State Warriors 1-0. Game 2 is tomorrow night at 10:30 PM ET in Oakland.
