Chris Mullin hesitant to become Kings head coach mid-season

Now that the Sacramento Kings and owner Vivek Ranadive have parted ways with head coach Mike Malone, the sights are officially set on Kings advisor Chris Mullin, who has had several working relationships with members of the Kings management.

But ESPN reports that Mullin is reluctant to jump into the Kings head coaching vacancy during the season largely he wouldn’t have the chance to prepare a system and a staff in the offseason.

Chris Mullin is resisting the invitation to make an in-season move from an advisory role to the bench ‎of the Sacramento Kings, according to NBA coaching sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that Kings owner Vivek Ranadive has spent much of the last 24 hours lobbying Mullin to replace the fired Mike Malone despite his lack of NBA coaching experience. But sources say Mullin has reservations about making such a leap in the middle of the season, without the benefit of training camp or the time to assemble a veteran-laden coaching staff like Steve Kerr has as a rookie head coach at Golden State.

Sources say that Mullin, in recent months, has indeed expressed some interest to associates about trying his hand at coaching down the road. But if he can ultimately be persuaded to take the Kings’ job, sources say, chances are far greater that it would happen going into next season as opposed to an in-season appointment.

Kings assistant Ty Corbin is tasked as the interim head coach until Ranadive makes a hire. The first pronounced candidates to replace Malone were George Karl and Vinny Del Negro until Mullin surfaced as the top choice.

Now we should see just how much they prefer Mullin in the meantime. If they are able to bring in someone of Karl’s caliber who they feel can start to meet their desires of competing for playoff contention again, waiting the season out just to hire Mullin might not be the move.
