Chauncey “Mr. Big Shot” Billups is being honored tonight with the Detroit Pistons hanging his jersey in the rafters. He was a huge part of that 2004 Championship team that dethroned the loaded Los Angeles Lakers that included Shaquille O’ Neal, Kobe Bryant, Gary Payton, and Karl Malone.

These guys dominated the ball defensively and really emphasized the concept of team basketball. The ’04 Pistons didn’t really have a clear cut superstar, it was more about everyone being involved and playing their role. Chauncey was their point guard and the director out on the floor. He had solid numbers which contributes to why he’s was so beloved and considered a great point guard.

During his 8 year stint with the Pistons, he averaged 16.5 points and 6.2 assists per game and 17.6 points and 5.9 assists per game during the playoffs. But his impact was bigger than his numbers. He was known for knocking down clutch shots, hence the nickname “Mr. Big Shot”, but he also was a true leader and well respected for his character. Chauncey Billups will always be appreciated as a great player that touched the court and his name will be amongst some of the best to ever play in The Palace.
