Paul-Pierce-October-2014

Free agency is creeping upon us by the minute which means more news is being released about players opting out of their current contract. Another name you can add to that list is Paul Pierce.

We all know that Pierce has decided to play next season, but what team? Only time will tell.

According to Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post, Pierce will forgo his $5.5 Million dollar player option:

Washington Wizards forward Paul Pierce has decided to play next season but is expected to bypass his $5.5 million player option, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

This doesn’t mean that Pierce couldn’t end up back with the Washington Wizards next season. For Pierce, this is such a smart move on his part. Doing this, he can leverage more money from the Wizards with the claim of having a great end to the season, and was “Mr. Big Shot” in the playoff run he had with Washington. There will be plenty of other teams in the running for the player out of Kansas. News has come out that the Los Angeles Clippers could make a serious run at signing the veteran small forward.

For Washington, letting the veteran look elsewhere could be a smart move on their part because they want to clear up as much cap space as they can in their hunt for 2016 free agent Kevin Durant.
