The Dallas Mavericks had an interesting offseason. Tyson Chandler left for the Phoenix Suns, and the Mavericks were looking for someone to replace him. DeAndre Jordan looked like the replacement after verbally committing to a 4-year/$80 million contract. After having second thoughts, Jordan decided to stay in Los Angeles. Mark Cuban was furious. The Mavericks then signed Zaza Pachulia, Javale McGee, and Samuel Dalembert as last-minute help to make up for the loss of Chandler and Jordan.

However, their offseason got better. They were able to sign Wesley Matthews from the Portland Trail Blazers to replace Monta Ellis. Matthews is a well established two-way guard coming off an Achilles injury. He is looking to make noise with his new team. Dallas was also able to sign Deron Williams after his release from the Brooklyn Nets. The Mavericks had trouble at point guard the past couple of seasons, most recently with the Rajon Rondo experiment, so Williams gives them comfort for now. They also drafted Justin Anderson from Virginia in the draft who looks like a capable backup for both the 2 and 3 spots.

Of course, they have Dirk Nowtizki, the franchise. Nowitzki is trying to lead this completely re-built squad back into the playoffs in a really tough Western Conference.

What should fans look forward to this season?

A team with a lot to prove. Dirk is battling father time, Deron Williams is attempting to revitalize his career, and Wes Matthews is coming off a serious injury. But the guy with the most to prove this season is Chandler Parsons. Parsons was the team’s top prize free agent last offseason, but only averaged 15.7 points per game and down scoring nights before a knee injury ended his season. He needs to take advantage of his last seasons with Nowtizki.

The Mavericks are lucky they have Rick Carlise as a head coach. He is known for getting the best out of his players. The Mavericks have players that want to win and a coach that wants the same. Their aim is the playoffs.

 Projected starting lineup:

  • PG: Deron Williams
  • SG: Wesley Matthews
  • SF: Chandler Parsons
  • PF: Dirk Nowitzki
  • C: Zaza Pachulia

Who can emerge as a star?

Right now Dirk Nowitzki is the star of the Mavericks, but unfortunately, his career is coming near the end. Chandler Parsons needs to become the Mavericks next star. The reason Mark Cuban signed Parsons was to find someone who can replace Nowitzki after his retirement. Last season he had moments where he looked like he could be that guy, but his health prevented him from doing so. If he stays healthy and improves on his scoring production, the Mavericks can make the playoffs in the wild Western Conference.

What will be their final record?

43-39
