Over the last week, Deron Williams requested a release from the Brooklyn Nets. His wish came true and is now expected to sign with the Dallas Mavericks.
The Nets now lose a troubled former NBA star who was owed a ton of money. The Mavericks now add an above average point guard who’s signing eases the pain with the DeAndre Jordan debacle. So you must be asking yourself, why is this good for the Boston Celtics?
All offseason, the Celtics have been looking to add a star. They tried moving up in the draft, but failed to enter the lottery. They had to go with plan B and signed Amir Johnson and Jonas Jerebko to two-year deals in free agency. If they can’t sign a star, they have to build their team through the draft. luckily, the Celtics are loaded with draft picks.
Next offseason, the Celtics own an unprotected first-round pick from the Brooklyn Nets and a top-7 protected first-round pick from the Dallas Mavericks. Both could potentially be lottery picks.
Two lottery picks is the best case scenario for the Celtics. With Deron Williams out of Brooklyn, they are now a worse team then last season. Last season, the Nets just barely made the playoffs eight seed in a weak Eastern Conference. Both the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers improved from last season. Both missed the playoffs.
In Dallas, they lost Rajon Rondo, Monta Ellis, and Tyson Chandler in the same offseason. Then they lost out on DeAndre Jordan who verbally committed to the team. Now, Deron Williams is a fallback option who was lucky to have been released by the Nets right after it looked dark in Dallas.
But, Deron Williams isn’t the same point guard he used to be. Last season, Deron Williams averaged 13 points per game which was his worst scoring average since his rookie year per ESPN.com. Over the last two seasons, he has played 64 and 68 games and always seemed to get injured. Entering his 11th NBA season at the age of 32, Williams play is on the decline.
The Western Conference isn’t easy. The Mavericks made the playoffs last season with ease, but lost in five games to the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs. With Kevin Durant returning to the Thunder, Anthony Davis on the rise on the Pelicans, and Suns finally getting their rim protector in Tyson Chandler, the Mavericks will have to consistently win to make the playoffs. If Deron Williams can’t stay healthy, the Mavericks will struggle to win consistently.
The Mavericks still have Dirk Nowitzki, Chandler Parsons, Wesley Matthews, and a championship winning head coach in Rick Carlisle. Even with this talent, it will be tough to make the playoffs. I said after DeAndre Jordan going back to LA, they will not make the playoffs.
The Dallas Mavericks will NOT make the 2016 NBA Playoffs. The West is just too good

Danny Ainge has a massive smile on his face. Trading Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett has now paid off. The Celtics have the talent to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, and now own picks from teams who look to be on the decline in next summers draft. There is still the possibility both the Mavericks and Nets make the playoffs, but they don’t look strong enough in their own respective conferences.
If the Celtics have to rely on the draft, they picked two good teams to trade with. Celtics v.s Nets or Mavericks games will be closely watched by every Celtics fan across the country. Deron Williams to the Mavericks is great for the Boston Celtics.
