Come July 1st, New Orleans Pelicans forward DeMarcus Cousins will have his pick of the litter in deciding what NBA team he will sign with as an NBA free agent.

In 48 games this season, the 6-11 270 pound Cousins was an overgrown stats stuffer for the Pelicans. Boogie averaged 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists for New Orleans before tearing his achilles in January.

Drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 2010 out of Kentucky, Cousins played 6 ½ seasons for Sactown before being traded to the Pelicans.

Although he did not always have the best relationship with Kings management, Cousins’ heart is still in Sacramento.

The NBA forward made headlines a couple months ago when he reached out to the family of Stephon Clark and offered to pay for his funeral.

Stephon Clark: Surrounded by love, trouble and tragedy, and now a rallying cry for justice after police shooting

On the evening of March 18, 2018, Clark, an unarmed 22 year old black male and father of two was shot at 20 times and killed by two Sacramento police officers in his grandmother’s backyard.

The Sacramento police department contends that Clark fit the description of a man who was said to have been breaking car windows on the 7500 block of 29th Street in south Sacramento.

Accountability has been zero up until this point,” Stephon Clark’s uncle, Curtis Gordon told me on the Scoop B Radio podcast.

“That is why the pulse in Sacramento is what it is. This is why Stephon Clarks name is a little more popular than sadly other men’s lives that have been lost, because it’s been boiling and people have been talking about it. So we can only hope that with that energy and feelings, that people have some sense of trust in the system.”

The Clark family set up a  GoFundMe with a goal of $50,000 for the funeral expenses and raised more than $80,000.

Cousins’ voluntary decision to pay for the funeral made a lot of folks happy.  He put his money where his mouth was.“Boogie gave some of the blessings that have been bestowed upon him and his career,” said Gordon.

“Reached out and offered whatever help he could and follow through on them. Which let me be clear that is the key for anyone, any organization or person following through on the word that you give especially someone that is mourning. He came through and been there still and we appreciate him.”

DeMarcus CousinsCousins averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists during his 6 ½ year career with Sacramento.

Whether Boogie decides to stay or leave New Orleans during this summer’s NBA free agency craze,  his noble act in Sacramento is not forgotten. “We love him,” said Gordon

“He is still connected to us as a whole.”
