Steve Kerr’s pick for League MVP is a valid one

There are so many valid candidates for League MVP this season. There’s no question that a lot of people are going with either Russell Westbrook or James Harden. Of course LeBron James is still in the mix because he’s just that good. But with Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant joining forces, their chances have diminished due to their quantity of shots presumably decreasing.

Its rare that you get a coach that doesn’t choose his own player as the next MVP. However, Steve Kerr isn’t like every other coach in the league. When asked who he presumes to be the MVP for the 2016-2017 NBA season, he gave a very interesting answer:

I love this pick by Steve Kerr. Damian Lilliard is a guy that people have slept on and constantly looked over. This kid can ball and he has been leading the Portland Trail Blazers for years.

After LaMarcus Aldridge departed before the beginning of last season, many people wrote the Trail Blazers off. But Damian Lillard had other plans. He led them to the second round of the NBA Playoffs and gave the Golden State Warriors a run for their money. Lillard averaged 25.1 points per game as well as 6.8 assists and shot .419 from the field last year. He finished the season 6th in scoring and 8th in assists. And although debatable, in my eyes he was the 4th best point guard last season behind Curry, Westbrook, and Irving.

He’s only made the All-Star team twice but one of those were a coaches decision and the other was due to a injury to Blake Griffin. Damian Lillard is used to this overlooked mantra that has been his career. He came from a small school and made a name for himself in the league. And although he might not have gotten the respect that he desires, that quest for the proper respect is what pushes him. He has played with a chip on his shoulder and that has turned his career into a productive one thus far.  I do believe he will be in the MVP discussion all season long and if he wins, I wouldn’t be surprised one bit.
