Dion Waiters is a 24-year-old free agent wing who upped his game with the Thunder this past postseason run. Waiters had his qualifying offer rescinded by Oklahoma City, making him an unrestricted free agent. Waiters faced a lot of maturity and efficiency questions through out his entire career but really seemed to put it together last season. He really seemed to improve on his defense, playmaking and he looked very much at home as the third or fourth weapon with the Thunder. Waiters’ minutes over the last three regular seasons are almost the same but his shooting percentages were best when he took more shots and was more of a focal point of the Thunder’s offense.
So what happens now? Most teams in the league already have players in the position Waiters plays. With the Thunder rescinded his qualifying offer so late into the offseason, there just aren’t many teams that have cap space left to give him money.
NBA teams like the Denver Nuggets already have a logjam at the wing, and the Sixers have been careful about adding veterans and not overspending this offseason. It’s not clear exactly how long it will take Waiters to find a new home after what looked like such a phenomenal end to his contract year. A few options that come to my mind is the Sacramento Kings or the New Orleans Pelicans, but would they have interest in Waiters splitting minutes with rookie Buddy Hield?
Despite Waiters’s reputation as a selfish player, it’s worth remembering that he’s coming off a surprisingly effective postseason. In a free agency market where Timofey Mozgov can sign a $64 million contract, Waiters’s inability to find a suitor is just weird. He is only 24 years old, was talented enough to be drafted no. 4 overall in the 2012 NBA Draft, and could probably be had for a fairly reasonable price. He has been working out and Instagramming them and waiting for any team to call. I think eventually someone is going to sign Waiters. I would be shocked to see a guy who has worked hard and seems like he has changed and seems more mature. There is still a few months left in this NBA offseason and injuries always happen.
