Yesterday, Mavericks Gaming, the NBA 2K League team of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks selected Artreyo Boyd with the first pick in the 2018 NBA 2K League Draft.

Who?

Better known to his gaming brethren as Dimez made history by becoming the first ever pick in the brand new league. He was one of 101 other draftees yesterday at the Hulu Madison Square Garden Theater.

The 17-team esports league that is NBA-endorsed uses digital characters that will simulate game play of real NBA players.

Dimez’s NBA 2K player is a 6-5 215 lb point guard that can pass, shoot, distribute and go after it on the court. How appropriate. Ironically, the first pick is an East Cleveland, Ohio native who is a fan of the hometown Cleveland Cavaliers and is a fan of former Cav Kyrie Irving.

After being drafted, Dimez checked in with me yesterday on the Scoop B Radio Podcast.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: So, you’re like Cardi B!

Dimez: [laughter] I’m like Cardi B? In what way?

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: In the sense of, you got a hit you got drafted. You know? You’re a Cleveland guy going to Dallas. How do you feel?

Dimez: I feel great. I’m literally ready to get there and start playing and start practicing with my team and being on this journey to get to the championship, that’s what I’m all about.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: I know in the NBA and in the NFL often times guys already know they’re the first pick going in. What indication did you have going in that you were going to be the first pick?

Dimez: Just confidence in myself, confidence in my game, confidence in myself, confidence that everybody would recognize my past accomplishments because anybody could say they’re the best player. But do you have the credentials to show that? I feel like my credentials stand out and they recognized it and I’m happy they have faith in me.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: How far in advance did you know that you were going to be the first pick?

Dimez: Sitting out there in the crowd when I got that phone call from Mark Cuban and he told me: ‘Welcome to Dallas’ and he congratulated me and I appreciate it.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: For you, when you play 2k as a casual guy what teams do you use?

Dimez: I don’t usually play casually. I’m assuming you mean just like a quick match.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: Yea

Dimez: I mean I can really play with anybody, we usually just match up so depending on what team you pick it may depend on what team I pick.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: So, you’re a Cleveland guy?

Dimez: Yes, I am.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: So, if I were to pick the Cavs and I was playing against you now, I’m assuming you’d use the Warriors?

Dimez: Dallas Mavericks!

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: So, looking at the roster of the Mavericks, in your mind, what’s your strategy? Is Dirk your go to guy? Are you going with Nerlens Noel? Like who’s going to be your go-to guy while you’re playing the game?

Dimez: Well Dirk is glitchy, so he’s hard to stop that’s my go to guy, for sure because with the Cavs roster they don’t really have anybody to guard him and you can’t stop the post fade. But yea I’m going with Dirk, for sure, that’s my go to guy.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: He’s a veteran. He’s been in the league for a while. What’s so special about him to you?

Dimez: How he consistently does what he does, like I said, the post fade is like his go- to move and that’s the most unstoppable move in the league and you can’t stop him.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: You’re kind of a rarity because you got to shake the commissioners hand, you’re like every NBA player. Haters would say it’s Photoshopped. For you, where will that picture of you shaking the commissioners hand be in your house?

Dimez: It’s going to go right next to the championship that I’m about to get in the league, that’s where it’s going to go right there. I’s just a memory, so I’m ready to get to it.
