Steve Kerr and Kevin Durant

Why Kevin Durant In Golden State May Not Work

I’m playing the devil’s advocate right now. At this point, every indication points towards the fact that Durant will work perfectly with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. He’s an incredible shooter on a jump shooting team. It should work perfectly, right?

Well, maybe not.

Kevin Durant is an elite player in the NBA, no doubt about it. Since his years in Seattle, he has been the focal point of the offense. Every move, rotation, and pick on offense is set to get him open. In Golden State, that will be different.

The one thing that makes the Warriors so great is their off-ball movement. Sure, they have incredible talent and their P&R between Draymond and Steph was spectacular. But, if you watch their tape, you’ll notice that their off-ball movement is what gets them open. It is what enables Steph to get a switch on Tristan Thompson.

In OKC, when there was off-ball movement, it was from Durant’s teammates to get him open. KD wasn’t the one to set screens. In Golden State, Curry sets screens. Steph understands that to get himself open, sometimes setting a screen for someone else will open up the floor for himself. Is Durant ready to do that?

I’m sure Kevin Durant cares about his legacy and wants to be one of the best of all time. We don’t know yet if he’s ready to fork over a good amount of his shots that he had with the Thunder to benefit the team. Some players need to have the ball in their hands to be both happy and productive. We need to find out if Kevin Durant is one of those players before we can hand the Warriors the trophy.

We’ll see when October hits.
