Landing the No. 1 pick was step one for the Sixers and now comes the evaluation, research and scouting process to determine the best talent to pick for the first pick in the NBA Draft. For the first time in 20 years, they have free reign of the entire draft board and they can basically do whatever they want to do. Every mock has it being Ben Simmons from LSU or Brandon Ingram from Duke.
Simmons does have tons of talent and it is undeniable. He will no doubt be a star, one of those players who will wow you with crisp passing one moment and then score the next with adding some consistent rebounding all night long. Now enter Ingram, with his 7-foot-3 wingspan and the comparisons to Kevin Durant have been flying around, though he’ll have to definitely add weight onto his skinny frame. Suddenly, the Sixers can score down low with Okafor, if they do keep him. Plus, the outside with Ingram and they could have Dario Saric who is supposedly coming over from Europe and the big key to all of this is if Joel Embiid can be 100% healthy.
Brandon Ingram would immediately address the Sixers need for shooters as he was one of the better three-point shooters in college basketball this past season. Ingram averaged 16 points per game and was shooting 40% from three. To me, Robert Covington was the only consistent forward who was shooting the three ball but Covington did have his moments where he struggled shooting the ball.
Although he is not necessarily a point forward like Ben Simmons, Ingram can handle the ball in the open floor. He plays pretty unselfishly even with his ability to score himself. Now, he is not going to put up 8 or 9 assists a game but he will find the open teammate when necessary. With him maybe being drafted I think the Sixers offense can turn around dramatically with the pieces they already have in place.
