UConn Women Trio take their next step

The trio of Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck dominated the college basketball scene by winning four national championships! The trio became the first players to win four NCAA national championships for men or women.

Stewart was the star off the trio as she won the Most Outstanding Player award four times. She is also a three-time Naismith College Player of the Year and a two-time Wade trophy winner. Stewart finished second on UConn’s all-time scoring list (2,676), fourth in rebounds (1,179) and first in blocks with 414. Jefferson is a two-time Nancy Lieberman awarded to the top point guard in college basketball. She finished 22nd in scoring (1,532), first in assists (659) and 2nd in steals (353). Tuck finished her career with 1,298 points. In her final year at UConn Tuck became one of four players to have over 100 assists and one of six to shoot over 50 percent from the floor.

Stewart, Jefferson and Tuck went in that order for the WNBA draft — Stewart to the Seattle Storm, Jefferson to the San Antonio Stars and Tuck to the Connecticut Sun. Stewart had the best debut out of the three with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, while Jefferson and Tuck struggled, both shooting under 20 percent from the floor in their debuts.

But there was something that they had to deal with, which they weren’t used to in their college careers, and that is losing. The trio only lost five games during their careers at UConn, so watching them grow in the WNBA will be interesting because of the struggles they will experience at the professional level.
