Should the Philadelphia Sixers Trade Jahlil Okafor?

The Sixers enter the 2016 NBA Draft with three draft picks in the first round. They didn’t end up getting two top five picks but the most reliable trade piece they could trade on draft night is Jahlil Okafor. As soon as the NBA draft lottery was over he was being tag to teams like the Boston Celtics, who are in need of a consistent big man.

The huge question throughout last season was can Okafor and Nerlens Noel work well together? Now, throw Joel Embiid into the mix, if he’s healthy and playing, and the Sixers have a mass of big men in their frontcourt. Sooner or later, somebody has to go. The math just doesn’t add up and the minutes aren’t there for everyone.

Can any of the three play together? It’s a fair question, but the Okafor-Noel combo was a failure in my opinion, and while it’s been only one year, the two of them simply don’t appear to complement one another. Watching Embiid college game highlights I can also have a difficult time to envision an Okafor-Embiid pairing being any better, as both of their games are somewhat similar styles and they take up roughly the same area on the court, which would mean that wouldn’t add up either.

Unless the Sixers intend to trade both Noel and Embiid this offseason and build around Okafor, it’s unclear to me how the pieces are supposed to fit. This is maybe a good thing though for the Sixers, but it’s not easy to say with Joel Embiid making his Sixers debut along side whoever they draft No. 1 overall.

Some aspects of Okafor’s game are still a concern to me when watching him play. The big questions I have is will he ever become a good defensive player and can he be a consistent rebounder? True, Okafor has only played one year in college and has played one year on the pro level. Then again, in addition to possible attitude problems or maturity problems with Jahlil, there are enough red flags to at least wonder whether this is somebody the Sixers should be actually building around.

To me all signs are leading to trading Okafor during the draft or during the offseason. A team that is desperate for a big man could over pay for Okafor. I would definitely be calling a team like the Boston Celtics or the Phoenix Suns and asking what they would give up. If the Sixers draft Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram with their 1st overall pick and then land another top 10 pick like a Kris Dunn from Providence or a Buddy Hield from Oklahoma, this organization will be very happy coming out of draft night on June 23rd.
