We’ve all heard about Karl-Anthony Towns’s terrific season. He’s one of the great rookies of our generation and will undoubtedly be the rookie of the year. With how good he has been lately, there really can’t be any arguments made for any of the other rookies. Sure, players like Porzingis, Jokic, Booker, and Turner have all had tremendous seasons, but their seasons still pale in comparison to KAT’s.
Towns is averaging over 18 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting right around 55% from the field. Towns, at this point in the season, has 752 total rebounds. He is the 4th rookie in the 21st century to have at least 750 rebounds. The other 3 are Dwight Howard, Blake Griffin, and Al Horford.
KAT also has a Total Rebound Percentage of 18.8%. Only 17 other qualified rookies have had a TRB% of at least 18.8. Gorgui Dieng was the last one to do it, two years ago.
The last comparison to the past we’ll take a look at is a combination of Towns’s rebounding and scoring. This year, as mentioned, KAT is averaging 18 and 10. Only 26 rookies in NBA History have averaged at least 18 points and 10 rebounds per game.
Of those 26 rookies, Blake Griffin is the only one to have done it in the 21st century. KAT is about to be the second. Also, another intriguing take away from that list is that Towns has the 3rd best field goal percentage out of all of those rookies. Only Shaq and Tim Duncan shot better from the floor in their rookie season.
So, what did you learn from all of these stats and comparisons? That Karl-Anthony Towns is pretty damn good. Wait…you already knew that. Oh well.
