I sit back and remember the greatest WNBA player of all time, Cynthia Cooper.
When the WNBA first started, everyone talked about three players to be the face of the league — Rebecca Lobo, Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes. No one spoke of the great Cynthia Cooper, who turned out to be the face of the league. As a young boy in middle school it was inspiring watching her play and make history.
As a player, Coop won four straight WNBA titles, four straight league MVPS, three scoring Titles and 2 back to back league MVPs while only being in the league for 5 years playing for the Houston Comets. She was the true definition of a combo guard, with her killer instinct on the floor as a scorer and also setting up her teammates as a floor general. I think people forget this woman started in the WNBA at the age of 34 years old, just pure total dominance in a 5-year span, being the first player to reach 2,500 points. Everyone looked to Sheryl Swoopes (who was also Cooper’s teammate to be the face of the league) but Cynthia Cooper put the league on her back when It all started and I appreciate that. At 5’10, 150 lbs out of Chicago, her career averages were 21 points per game while averaging 5 assists per game on a loaded team that had Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson. She was cold silky smooth and no player will ever compare to her greatness.
The WNBA logo should be changed to Cynthia Cooper.
