As everyone knows, the Sixers currently sit with the first overall pick in this year’s NBA draft, and it is either going to be Brandon Ingram or Ben Simmons. The Sixers sit with two other first round picks in the later part of the first round with the 24th and 26th overall picks. I would love to see the Sixers use both or one of those picks to move up in the first round even more. The one position I think they should focus on is the guard position. They really struggled with that position and they were a bit inconsistent. But if they do stick with staying at those two slots here are some guards I think the Sixers should look at later in the 1st round:
Demetrius Jackson, Point Guard, Notre Dame: I watched Jackson this past college basketball season and especially during the NCAA Tournament. What I saw out of him was an explosive athlete with a very quick first step. He averaged 15.8 points, 4.7 assists and 2.2 turnovers during his junior year at Notre Dame. That is another thing about Jackson you don’t have to worry about is he is mature and he stayed in college until he was a junior. He is listed at 6’2 and 194 lbs. One place where Jackson could improve I thought is his passing ability. He’s still not a completely natural passer and can look for his shot a bit too much. One benefit is that he does limit turnovers, as he had a 13 percent turnover rate in his past two seasons. However, what I saw was his overall vision is average for the position, and could be the difference between him becoming a full-time starter or a backup scoring guard that can play lead guard. I think he is one player the Sixers may have to move up to get if they want him but should definitely aim for.
Dejounte Murray, Point Guard, Washington: Murray is a bit of a prospect at the age of 19. He is a big guard and listed at 6’5, 170 lbs. After watching highlights on him I can see why Murray is a playmaker in the open court and is great at making his way to the basket. He does use all of his length and quickness to make plays near the rim and is very unselfish. The one big knock against him that I saw is he is not a very good shooter. He only hit 41.6% of his shots overall and 28.8% from three this past season. There is raw talent there but he has to fix that shot in my opinion to help this team.
Malik Beasley, Shooting Guard, Florida State: The Sixers need perimeter shooting help wherever they can get it. Beasley averaged 15.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in his only season at Florida State and he is listed at 6’5 and 190 lbs. What stood out to me during Beasley’s highlights and watching a few of his games was his shooting form and that it reminds me a little bit of Klay Thompson’s shooting form. He does a really good job of squaring his shoulders and setting his feet before shooting. Beasley though is not just a standing shooter. Beasley is also a really good athlete and can attack the rim. Sixers need this in their guards. Hollis Thompson to me does throw up some wild three pointers and Nik Stauskas really never found his touch from three-point land. Defensively, Malik was a good defender in college and could be a good defender in the NBA and uses his entire frame to play defense.
Isaia Cordinier, Guard, France: The Sixers could go and draft a stash type of player in the later 1st round. Cordinier is 6’5 but has a huge 6’8 wingspan. Just watching Cordinier’s highlights you see right away how great of an athlete he is and he has the ability to make those kinds of plays on a regular basis. He does have a three-point shot, although he can be inconsistent. He is good passer and sets up his teammates nicely at times. The reason why I think the Sixers can stash him and let him develop more in Europe before playing in the pros is his lack of strength and his ball handling skills are both weaknesses, which I think can prevent him from playing right away in the NBA.
