Michael Beasley signs with Memphis Grizzlies

NBA: Dallas Mavericks at Miami Heat
Michael Beasley looks to steer himself straight in Memphis.

According to Adrian Wojanrowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a non-guranteed contract with troubled free agent Michael Beasley. Beasley will join the Grizzlies for training camp which begins on September 30th.

Beasley worked out for Memphis earlier this week, and chose the Grizzlies because he believes he can fill their vacancy at backup power forward. Beasley also worked out for the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers earlier this summer.

Bealsey, 25, appeared in 55 games for the Miami Heat last season, averaging 7.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Beasley’s boneheaded ways have prevented him from blossoming into the star many thought he would become. Ever since being selected by the Miami Heat with the 2nd overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Beasley has bounced around the league looking to secure a minimum contract.

Michael Beasley averages 13.2 points, and 4.9 rebounds per game for his career. In 2010-11, Beasley averaged 19.2 points per game as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Beasley has also played for the Phoenix Suns.

Wizards Add Rasual Butler Before Training Camp

The Washington Wizards have reportedly signed veteran Rasual Butler to a non-guaranteed contract a week before training camp. Butler will be competing for the final spot on Washington’s 15-man roster. The 35-year-old had a similar deal with the Indiana Pacers last season and played in 50 regular season games and 11 postseason games for the Pacers.

The Wizards can still invite three more players to camp. Butler is joined by Damion Jones and Xavier Silas as invitees to compete for a roster spot.

Hawks Sign Kent Bazemore and Elton Brand

The Atlanta Hawks have signed free-agent guard Kent Bazemore and re-signed Elton Brand.

Brand_Bazemore_Hawks

Atlanta Hawks coach, Mike Budenholzer, said Tuesday that Kent Bazemore is an especially versatile player on defense where he can guard almost any position. Bazemore played for the Lakers and the Warriors last season, and he went on to average 13.1 points in 23 games with Los Angeles.

Budenholzer also went on to call Elton Brand “The ultimate professional and a terrific leader.” Brand is coming off of his fifteenth season, and he isn’t getting any younger. A couple big things Brand brings to the table is leadership, as Budenholzer mentioned, and work ethic. He could help mentor younger players like Adreian Payne, and he can be a solid role player coming off of the bench. Brand averaged 5.7 points and 4.9 rebounds last season with Atlanta.

Ray Allen versus Allen Iverson: A Basketball Society Classic

Today’s classic game brings a rivalry that dates back to both players’ college days. Allen Iverson and Ray Allen used to have battles similar to this game when Georgetown faced off against UConn. They may not have been at the same caliber back in the university days, but they were still great games nonetheless. Their previous history and the time of this game made this an instant classic.

The year was 2001 and the Sixers are in the midst of a magical run through the playoffs led by the league MVP and everyone’s favorite “little guy,” Allen Iverson. The only team standing in their way was the 52-30 Milwaukee Bucks, led by a 25 year-old Ray Allen. This game six came after a closely contested game five that gave Philly the 3-2 series lead. Milwaukee was now back at home and they had their backs against the wall. Threes were raining down from all over the court by Iverson and Allen while each player fought for their team’s championship hopes. The Bucks had a great a first half, but then the Sixers came out to play after halftime. There were signs of a comeback, but even though Philly outscored Milwaukee by 19 in the second half, it was not enough to capture the series in six.

Final Score: Milwaukee Bucks 110 – Philadelphia 76ers 100

Ray Allen: 41 pts(12-25 FG, 9-13 3PT FG, 8-8 FT), 4 ast, 3 stl

Allen Iverson: 46 pts(14-33 FG, 5-9 3PT FG, 13-15 FT), 3 ast, 1 stl

Tyson Chandler: Mavericks Will Be A Great Defensive Team

The Dallas Mavericks won the 2011 NBA championship with Tyson Chandler as their center and anchor. The Mavericks brought Chandler back this summer in a trade with the New York Knicks, where he spent his last three seasons.

Talking with Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Chandler speaks on his desire to impact the defensive identity of this Mavericks team,

I’m going to make them defend. We’re going to defend. You can score as many points as you want, but at the end of the day, defense wins championships and that’s what we’re going to do.

Guys don’t have to be the best individual defenders in the league, but we are going to be a great defensive team. You have to do your assignment. We’re not going to take plays off.

Chandler is basically talking about doing the job he’s accustomed to, regardless of any roster he’s on. Dallas’ most significant acquisition this summer was adding Chandler Parsons in free agency, which gives Dallas another viable offensive option so supplement Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis.

Improving offensively was important, particularly in the loaded, score-to-survive western conference, but establishing a strong defensive presence is just as important, and Chandler knows it. Defense is a mentality and a choice. As he stated and understands, turning guys into great individual defenders overnight is impossible, however it is perfectly reasonable for Chandler to help invoke the mentality for this Dallas team to defend. The former Defensive Player of the Year has plenty of experience in that department.

Andrew Wiggins Doesn’t Feel Pressure Going To Minnesota

The no. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft was just traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a blockbuster deal. Andrew Wiggins is headed to a new situational atmosphere with new teammates, a new role, and new goals.

He talked about his feelings of heading to Minnesota in an interview with Dime Magazine:

I think it’s a great situation whenever I think about it. It gives me more freedom. I’m sure surrounded by young guys that have the same intentions and determinations as me – to really win and get better every day.

I don’t really feel like it’s too much pressure right now. I’ve been through being the number one player in high school, in college, all that stuff. So, pressure to me has really died down; I don’t feel it as much as I used to.

It’s interesting to look at the difference in pressure levels for Wiggins had he remained a Cavalier. Playing alongside LeBron James in Cleveland would have been a spotlight in itself, but his role on the floor was bound to be somewhat reduced. His responsibilities would not have been as demanding as they are now, as the franchise player of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Without that particular spotlight and on a team that certainly isn’t expected to achieve, Wiggins’ development as the best player on a young NBA team might be much easier.

Report: Cavaliers To Sign A.J. Price

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Cleveland Cavaliers will sign point guard A.J. Price for their training camp.

The Cavs will bring veteran point guard A.J. Price to training camp. He played in only 28 games for Minnesota last season, and saw little action. The 6-foot-2 Price has played in 235 NBA games, averaging 5.9 points and shooting .381 from the field for his career.

The Cavaliers are currently at roster capacity with 17 players and are reportedly still holding out to add Ray Allen. Price will have a chance to compete as the third string guard for Cleveland.

Danny Ainge on Rondo's Future: "I really don't know"

Danny Ainge and Rajon Rondo

Celtics GM Danny Ainge unsure of what will come of his All-Star point guard.

Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo is in the trade rumor cycle until otherwise, and Celtics GM Danny Ainge is subject to questions on Rondo’s future until it comes about. Bill Doyle of the Telegram Gazette caught up with Ainge at a church in Worcester and brought up Rondo’s status for questioning,

The truthful answer is I really don’t know. I have no intention. I’m not trying to trade Rondo, but because he’s a free agent this summer, he assured me that he wants to stay in Boston. We’d love to keep him in Boston.

Sometimes that isn’t enough. Rondo, 28, has played 68 games in the last two seasons after his knee surgery in February 2013. He is set to make $12.9 million in the final year of his contract with the Celtics. He can become a free agent next summer. Ainge also added,

The possibility of a trade is not out of the question. Nobody is untradeable, but I don’t see that happening.

Trade rumors have circulated around Rondo for some time, even before this year. At this point, where it’s certain he will at least start the season in a Celtics uniform, potential deals will likely re-surface around Rondo closer to the trade deadline in February.

I love Rondo. He’s a fun kid to be around. I’ve seen a lot of growth in him as a person and maturity through the years.

Reports: Taj Gibson not happy about coming off Chicago's bench

0d2a8c0106e207894d1fbee899ddc3c5_crop_northGibson is not thrilled about coming off the Bulls bench.

According to a report from CSN Chicago, energetic Bulls forward Taj Gibson is not happy about the fact that he will most likely remain a reserve on the roster,

Privately, Gibson isn’t too thrilled with the prospect of continuing to be a reserve, according to multiple people familiar with the situation, but the upbeat, team-first player values winning and chemistry too much to make it an issue or distraction. Furthermore, being an underdog his entire basketball career, it could serve as motivation and help him thrive, building upon last year’s bounce-back campaign and improvement as a scorer, which came after a disappointing, injury-riddled season immediately following a long-term contract extension with the Bulls on Halloween 2012.

The 29-year-old made a noticeable case for the primary power forward spot last season, but the Bulls signed Pau Gasol in free agency this summer. It would be expected that Gasol will start alongside All-Star center Joakim Noah in the front court, moving Gibson to a back-up role once again.

Granted, Gasol is an upgrade over Gibson’s old competition in Carlos Boozer. The Bulls have Gibson to lead their more stout second unit featuring rookie Doug McDermott, and his defensive ability is certainly invaluable to Tom Thibodeau. If Gibson is prepared to perform his role it only speaks further to the depth and assets of the Chicago Bulls this season.
