After seeing Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson score 37 in one quarter against the Sacramento Kings last month, I figured that would be the most incredible scoring outburst we’d see in a basketball game this year.

Well, Florida State University freshman Xavier Rathan-Mayes had A LOT to say about that on Wednesday night, as he dropped 30 points on Miami in the final 4:38 of the game.

The Seminoles were down 18 points with a little under five minutes to go, and they were in dire need of a spark. Rathan-Mayes gave them that and more, packing a historically potent punch off of the bench. Rathan-Mayes hit five 3-pointers in a span of 2:35, going 8-for-10 from the field in the games final four minutes.

Florida State would ultimately lose the contest 81-77, but Rathan-Mayes’ valiant effort to bring FSU back into the contest cannot go unnoticed. Rathan-Mayes, a high school teammate of Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Andrew Wiggins, finished the game with 35 points, which tied his career-high.

When asked after the game to speak on his amazing scoring binge, Rathan-Mayes had this to say to the media:

“In high school I scored 55 in a game, but that was throughout the course of the game,” Rathan-Mayes said. “To score how I was doing it today, I’ve never done that before. The only thing I’ve seen like that was when I was watching the Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson scored 37 in one quarter.”

“It’s a feeling I can’t really describe,” Rathan-Mayes said. “The arena was quiet. It was like I was in there by myself. It was a feeling I’ve never, ever felt before. There was nothing else happening around me.”

Miami head coach Jim Larranaga must have been dumbfounded by Rathan-Mayes’ performance, and he echoed this sentiment in his postgame presser:

“I’ve never seen that before in my college coaching career,” said Miami’s Jim Larranaga, who has coached 934 games. “Outrageous. One of the greatest on-court performances I’ve ever seen.”
