A 7’3 gentle lovable giant. That’s what Boban Marjanovic was to the San Antonio Spurs. Tim Duncan and LaMarcus Aldridge were nothing compared to this man. Boban was the light that guided the Spurs last season. He was Steph Curry before Steph Curry. The 2nd coming of Jordan. The 2nd coming of Olajuwon.

The Spurs new they had a steal when they signed the Serbian last summer. Boban rained terror on opponents when he was on the court last season.

Opponents truly feared him.

The fans loved him. Often you’d hear Boban chants or even ‘M-V’P’ chants when he was on the line. That shouldn’t bring you too much shock though since he’s the best player in the league.

Since Boban only signed a 1-year contract with the Spurs, it was inevitable that he’d receive a large contract from a team because, again, he’s the best player in the league. The Pistons were the first to offer him a large contract worth a total of $21 million.

Boban Marjanovic, being the loyal and great man that he is, talked to Gregg Popovich and said that he wanted to stay. Popovich convinced him to go to Detroit though.

From the San Antonio Express News:

“He’s such a good kid, at some point I had to work to get him to understand that $21 million was different than $3 million,” Popovich said. “I said, ‘Get your a** out of here. Go. You’ve got to do it.’ But he felt bad.”

These words from Coach Popovich are what convinced Boban to leave San Antonio. Coach new that his incredible skills were not needed in San Antonio. Everyone in the Spurs organization along with their fans will miss him. But, it was time for him to move on.

Detroit will now be the destination for him. He was a delight for the people in San Antonio and everyone truly wishes he could stay, but San Antonio no longer needed his services.

Boban Marjanovic truly is the hero that San Antonio deserves, but not the one it needs right now.
