During an interview with Erik Gundersen of The Columbian, Portland Trailblazers guard Wesley Matthews stated that he believe’s that he’s not only an underrated two guard, but that he’s the best two-way shooting guard in the NBA.

I’m never going to be the type that gets gaudy numbers to make an All-Defensive team.

Do I think I’m All-Defense? Absolutely. I think I’m the best two-way two-guard in the NBA. But I feel like we need to be a good defensive team within the scheme of the game. We’re not out there gambling, trying to reach and get steals. That would put us in a bind if I don’t get it.

Matthews’ confidence must be applauded, even if his self-assessment is incorrect. Matthews is a stellar two-way player who understands his role well, and possesses the ability to play strong defense, shoot the three consistently and post up smaller wings.

Houston Rockets star James Harden was constantly hounded by Matthews during Portland and Houston’s first round playoff matchup last season, and Matthews forced Harden into shooting an abysmal 37% for the series. Even after successfully suffocating whom many consider to be the league’s best shooting guard, I wouldn’t consider Matthews the best two-way shooting guard in the Association.

He may not even be the best two-way swingman on his own team, as criminally underrated forward Nicolas Batum may be better on both ends than Matthews. Lance Stephenson, Klay Thompson, Dwyane Wade and Arron Afflalo may also disagree with Matthews, as they believe the distinction of best two-way shooting guard in the NBA belongs to them.
