Walt’s Weekly: The Boston Celtics are primed for another long win streak

The Boston Celtics began the 2017-2018 regular season as the hottest team in the NBA. They started the season 0-2, but won the next 16 games before losing 104-98 to the Miami Heat. During that stretch they beat the Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors.

Now the Celtics are on a five-game winning streak. They beat the Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves in three of their last four games.

Looking at the schedule ahead, the Celtics don’t play a top team for three weeks. They are primed for another long win streak.

The stretch begins with a battle against the Brooklyn Nets. The Celtics played the Nets on New Years Eve and won 108-105. That extended the Celtics win streak over the Nets to seven. During their win streak, the Celtics won by an average of 7.9 points.

Next is an NBA Global Game on Thursday against the Philadelphia 76ers. Both teams travel to London with plenty of days to prepare. The 76ers played the Detroit Pistons last night and don’t play until Thursday. Tonight’s game against the Nets is the Celtics last game until they travel across the pond.

The Celtics have had their way with the 76ers over the years. They won 13 of the last 14 games. Even though the Celtics are the favorite to win, the 76ers have won the last four games. One week after the Global Game, the Celtics have another game against the 76ers.

In between their matchups with the 76ers, the Celtics host the New Orleans Pelicans. This is another team the Celtics no previous issues with. The Celtics won five of the last six over the Pelicans by an average of 9.6 points. This will be their first game against both DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis. This is the Celtics toughest game over the next three weeks.

The schedule gets easier with a home game against the Orlando Magic. The Magic have lost 12 of the last 13 games and haven’t beat the Celtics in Boston since 2010.

The stretch ends with a road trip to southern California against the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers. The Celtics beat the Lakers four consecutive times but lost to the Clippers six of the last eight games. In the one game this season the Celtics played the Lakers, the Celtics won 107-96. There has been no matchup this season between the Celtics and Clippers.

After the Clippers game, the Celtics play at Oracle Arena against the Golden State Warriors. The Celtics are the only team in the last three seasons to have an above .500 record against the Warriors, but every season they’ve split the series. In their only matchup this season, the Celtics won 92-88. This is their only matchup versus a top team in the next three weeks.

With games against the Nets, 76ers, Pelicans, 76ers, Magic, Lakers, and Clippers, the Celtics are primed for another long win streak. Their confidence is high after defeating the Rockets, Cavaliers and Timberwolves over the last week and a half.
