With the 15th pick in the 2010 NBA draft, the Milwaukee Bucks selected the then junior Larry Sanders from VCU thinking that he will be the starting center for the franchise for a long time. 5 years later, he looks like he’ll be leaving the game for good.

His first two years in the league were a struggle, averaging only 6 points, 3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game while playing only an average of 13 minutes. His third year in the league however seemed like a turnaround for a promising NBA career, becoming the full time starting center. He had averaged 9.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks, which were second in the league behind Serge Ibaka. When the season ended, he finished third in the voting for most improved player, which was eventually won by Paul George. Those third year numbers may not be eye popping, but it seemed like it would a sign of great things to come for this franchise, which led the Bucks giving Sanders a 4-year $44 million extension.

In his fourth year, he missed 25 games because of a torn ligament in his thumb from a nightclub incident. Once he came back, he was injured again this time fracturing his orbital bone causing him to miss the rest of the season. Towards the end of the season, he was suspended for 5 games for violating the NBA drug policy after for testing positive for marijuana. This year, after a decent start for him, he was suspended again for testing positive for marijuana but this time he was suspended for 10 games. On Feburary 21st, the Bucks waived Sanders agreeing on a contract buyout.

Today he wrote an article from The Player’s Tribune explaining why he left the game which you can see here.

Along with the article, he also has a video from his point of view of what happened and how is feeling about the situation. We can’t predict the future of  Larry Sanders; Will he ever play in the NBA again? What happened? Is he a bust? but as of now it looks like he’ll be out of the league for quite some time.
