i-1Chicago won their season opener behind a strong effort from Pau Gasol.

Forwards Pau Gasol and Taj Gibson led the way for the Chicago Bulls in their 100-84 season opening thrashing of the New York Knicks on Wednesday night.

Gasol finished with 21 points (7-11 FG) and 11 rebounds in his Bulls debut, and Gibson, one of the league’s best 6th men, finished with 22 points (10-12 FG,) 8 rebounds and 1 block off the bench. Bulls guard Derrick Rose finished with 13 points (3-7 FG,) 5 assists and 3 rebounds in only 21 minutes of action.

Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony had a quiet night, only scoring 14 points on 5 of 13 shooting. Amar’e Stoudemire, who started the game for New York, made some noise early, hitting his first four shots of the game, but was silenced by Chicago’s stifling defense for the rest of the contest.

New York, a team that is still working on instituting the triangle offense under new coach Derek Fisher, struggled to execute on the offensive end, shooting an abysmal 36.5% from the field, and 17.6% from behind the arc. The 24 point defeat was the second largest season-opening loss in Knicks history.

New York will play Cleveland tomorrow in what will be the Cavaliers season and home opener, and the Bulls will host the Cavs on Halloween night in their home opener.
