One of the greatest players ever to step on an NBA court was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The “Captain” played the final regular season game of his career on this date (April 23rd) in 1989 against the Sonics. Kareem would finish that game holding pretty much every record that a big man could hold. Since I wouldn’t be able to write down every record he held, here are some of the major records that Kareem currently holds or is towards the top of:

Career points: 38,387    (1st in NBA/ABA History)

Career games: 1,560      (2nd in NBA/ABA History)

Career minutes: 57,446  (1st in NBA/ABA History)

Career rebounds:17,440 (4th in NBA/ABA History)

Career blocks: 3,189       (3rd in NBA/ABA History)

The Lakers would end up winning this game by a score of 121-116, but the final tally is not what Lakers fans were enthusiastically screaming their heads off for. They were cheering all game for Kareem. It was his night after all. He finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar stepped on the Los Angeles Lakers court for his final regular season game and the Lakers organization could not have given him a better goodbye. Watch how they officially said goodbye and watch the final game from one of the greatest.

Kareem has recently had quadruple bypass surgery. Long time friend and teammate Magic Johnson wished him the best:

Everyone here at the Society wants to wish Kareem well and we are praying for a speedy recovery for “The Captain” as well.
