Struggle is the last word I would use to describe Stephen Curry’s season

There’s been this notion surrounding back-to-back MVP Stephen Curry that he’s been struggling this year and that’s just blasphemous.

Coming into this year we knew every thing involved with the Golden State Warriors would include over-scrutiny and overreaction. Many questioned if they could gel and if there were enough shots to go around but as of yet, there hasn’t been many problems. Still a few kinks here and there but that was expected with such a big change in their roster.

This change has seemed to effect Stephen Curry the most. He’s seen the ball less as his time of possession has decreased tremendously from last season and with that, there’s been a slight decline in his numbers. That decline in his stats has caused fans to describe his season as a struggle and/or slump. When in reality, he’s having a very productive season.

This is a great case of the “what have you done for me lately judgement. Due to his phenomenal past two seasons, especially his unanimous MVP season, people believe that he’s struggling. Coach Steve Kerr explained Curry’s play perfectly back on December 27th after the Warriors lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers (via Anthony Slater of Mercury News):

“I think Steph has probably had the biggest adjustment of all of our players from Kevin (Durant)’s arrival,” Kerr said. “I think if you look at it from a practical standpoint, he’s doing great. His numbers are still fantastic. Forty percent from 3, 24 points per game. But he also happens to be coming off the greatest shooting season in the history of mankind last year. He has set the bar so high for himself that it’s going to be a point of discussion. We can help him. I can put him in a better position to get going. We’re still learning, still growing. I’m not the slightest bit concerned.”

In a recent interview with Chris Haynes of ESPN, Curry chuckled at those critics transcribing his season as a slump:

“That is the one that’s most comical, because if you look at the numbers at that point, in the politest way, I’ll take those slump numbers any day of the week,” Curry told ESPN. “But I know it’s a long year and a lot more games to play. I try not to get caught up in that nonsense. It’s a roller-coaster ride of a season. It is what it is.”

Stephen Curry has every right to believe it’s comical because it is. Although the numbers are slightly down, he’s still having the type of season that NBA players would die for. He’s 11th in scoring with an average of 24.8 points per game. He’s shooting the three at 40% and he’s right behind Eric Gordon (by one three-pointer) for the most threes made this year. To call this season a struggle is utterly ridiculous in my eyes. We knew an adjustment would have to made but if you ask me, Stephen Curry is doing just fine.
