The Golden State Warriors have demanded the attention of the entire basketball world this season as they have started at a historical pace and are chasing the record set by the ’95-’96 Chicago Bulls for best single season record. One person that’s still in awe of what the team is doing is San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

San Antonio isn’t far behind the Warriors with a 45-8 record which sets them 3.5 games back. Everyone seems to think that the Spurs are the best candidate to beat the Warriors even though they were blown out earlier this season. There is one reason why the Spurs could eventually topple the Warriors in a playoff series though. Apparently, Popovich doesn’t stop thinking about how to be the warriors.

Via Marc Stein of ESPN:

“I’ve spent more time thinking about Golden State than I have any other team I’ve ever thought about in my whole career,” Popovich told ESPN Radio on Friday. “Because they are really fun. I’d go buy a ticket and go watch them play. And when I see them move the ball, I get very envious. When I see them shoot uncontested shots more than anybody else in the league, it’s inspiring. It’s just great basketball.

“So I’m actually enjoying them very much. You try to solve them, but they’re in a sense unsolvable because it’s a particular mix of talent that they have. It’s not just that Steph [Curry] can make shots or that Klay can make shots or that Draymond Green is versatile. Everybody on the court can pass, catch and shoot. And they all get it.”

“They’re for real,” Popovich added. “They’re talented. But they’re also very, very smart.”

Getting this kind of praise from a coach like Pop is something to really be proud about. Obviously, their goal isn’t to just get some praise from a coach, but to go along with all the accolades that the team is getting, this is like icing on a cake. Also, on the other hand, it’s nice to see a coach that can appreciate an opposing team. Fans, coaches, and basketball purists all love to watch this Warriors team and the way they operate is just a beautiful sight in itself.

A playoff series with any combination of the Warriors, Spurs, and Thunder is something that all basketball fans are hoping and wishing for, but a Western Conference Finals featuring the Warriors and Spurs could be one of the most epic series in recent memory. Hopefully Popovich keeps thinking up ways to beat Golden State because no one has seemed to figure them out when they’re at full strength.
