The Breakdown

They say that the mid-range jump shot is a lost art in the NBA. Those people must not watch DeMar DeRozan play, especially this past season. The former USC Trojan had a career year in the 2016-2017 campaign, in which he posted a career high, 27.3 PPG. In the modern NBA, you would think DeMar utilizes the three-point shot to help with his impressive 27.3 PPG, however, that is not the case. DeMar has an old-school game which he focuses more on the mid-range rather than the three and paint, which is what the NBA has become.

DeMar DeRozan’s bread and butter is the mid-range, and there’s no reason for him to stop going to that. In his career year in which he averaged 27.3 PPG, DeMar DeRozan also shot 46.7% from the field. It gives a good idea on how prolific of a scorer DeMar actually is.

What could DeMar DeRozan do to expand his game even further? Incorporate the three-point shot to his arsenal. This past season, DeMar DeRozan only took 124 three-point attempts and made 33 of them, resulting in a 26.6 3PT%. In no way should he abandon his mid-range magic since it works to perfection, but adding a three-point shot would make it even more difficult for his defenders. A three-point shot would keep defenders honest and would possibly help DeRozan get even better looks all over the court.

DeMar DeRozan has already established himself as one of the league’s elite scorers, even without a three-point shot, which is impressive in this modern NBA. Imagine if he added a consistent three-point shot? Watch out.
