Being the son of a former player and the younger brother of the most prolific player in the NBA has to have it’s ups and downs. Always being mentioned as Dell’s son or Steph’s younger brother has to be annoying but Seth Curry hasn’t let that stop his dreams of being an NBA player.

Rocky is an understatement explaining Curry’s start in the NBA. Despite having a solid 3-years as a combo guard of the Duke Blue Devils, Seth went undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft. He maneuvered and worked his way through the D-League and 10-day contracts until he eventually signed with the Sacramento Kings in July of 2015.  The minutes for Curry were scarce and his window of opportunity was slim but he kept battling, hoping his game would shine. As the season came to an end, he decided to decline his player option making himself a free agent.

Seth Curry took a leap of faith believing in himself and his ability that a team would pick him up. And that opportunity came when he signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks. Playing time was blurred with the Mavericks containing a guard-heavy roster with guys like Deron Williams, Devon Harris, J.J. Barea, and also Wesley Matthews. However, they say patience is a virtue and that patience panned out in Curry’s favor during this season.

Confidence, consistency, and injuries have led to Seth Curry ending up as a starter for the Dallas Mavericks and he has made the most of it. The Mavericks are 7-3 with Curry as a starter and they’ve beaten some of the league’s best. Teams like the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the San Antonio Spurs were all victims of the hot streak that has been spiked by Dallas.

For the season, Seth is averaging 11.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 27.5 minutes per game. Those aren’t eye-popping numbers but when you compare them to the rest of his career, they are the best yet. And when you look at his production in the past ten games, you can see the progression that he’s making. During this 7-3 span as the starting guard, Curry averaged 15.2 points shooting 49.6% from the field and 48.1% from beyond the arc (stats don’t include 2/1/17 match-up against the 76ers).

This surge from Curry and the Mavericks also featured a career night where Seth had 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists to help take down the San Antonio Spurs. After the game, Curry received high praise from Coach Rick Carlisle who harped on the importance of Seth’s scoring:

“We know he can score,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “He’s a capable scorer, no question about it and whenever we can get him good shots, it’s a good thing for us.

“I’m just really impressed with the 10 rebounds. That’s a big difference-maker when our guards rebound like that.”

Seth Curry is making the most of his minutes and it’s been great to watch. We knew he had the potential in college but finally, it’s beginning to come to light. It will be interesting to see if he can keep up this production and make himself a staple on this Dallas Mavericks team.
