i-1Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins have Sacramento off to a strong start this season.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Sacramento Kings have agreed to a three-year, $40 million contract extension with forward Rudy Gay. Gay’s current deal is in its last year, and is paying him $19.3 million.

Gay’s new contract includes a player option for the 2017-18 season, giving Gay the option to test the free agent market in the summer of 2017 at 31 years old. Gay was acquired by the Kings from the Toronto Raptors in a trade last December, and has played effective basketball ever since arriving in Sacramento.

Gay’s message on Twitter regarding the extension was short, simple and to the point.

Gay shot a career high 48% from the floor in 55 games last year for the Kings, and averaged 20.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Through ten games this season, Gay is averaging 22.5 points per game, currently a career high for the former UConn Huskie.

Gay’s party and Kings brass discussed the parameters of a deal throughout the week, and were able to agree on an extension Saturday night.

The Sacramento Kings are currently 6-4, and defeated the defending champion San Antonio Spurs Saturday night.
