Over the weekend I had the chance to watch Roddy Gayle play for the first time for WeR1 (PA) at Rider University Team Camp in New Jersey. Gayle is a 6-foot-3 guard in the class of 2022 out of Niagra Falls, New York. He is ranked in the top 100 of his class in the state.

When you watch Gayle fly up and down the court and in the air, it only becomes harder to believe that he’s only 14 years old. Roddy is a graceful athlete, crafty and coordinated with the ball in his hands. He pushes the ball in long strides and makes simple, effortless decisions on the move.

As an upcoming prospect, Gayle has early notice from Division 1 programs. He currently holds offers from the University of Buffalo and Rutgers University.

In my interview with Roddy, he described his game as “pass-first” but then smiled when I asked if he could also put the ball in the basket. Roddy is a quality decision-maker on the floor, looking to make the first pass available in transition or on the move when he attacks in the half court. He sees passing, driving, and cutting lanes well and with his length and skill, is able to create just about anything he wants with the ball in his hands from the perimeter at any given time.

The luxury to thrive as a combo guard is a potential factor for Gayle as he matures. He can work with or without the ball. He has a fluid shooting touch. Making plays comes smoothly and naturally for Gayle. He’s the kind of player who makes difficult things look easy, not unlike his favorite NBA player Paul George, which is consistent with his generally nonchalant manner. Roddy shows a consistent willingness to be engaged on both ends of the floor and takes advantage of opportunities when he sees them.

Gayle’s father played college ball at LaSalle. His favorite players in the 2018 NBA Draft include Trae Young, Miles Bridges, and Michael Porter, Jr. Check out our full interview with footage from the rising prospect in the video below.
