According to Darnell Mayberry of the Oklahoman, Reggie Jackson will likely become a restricted free agent this summer.

The deadline to sign a contract extension is fast approaching and the Thunder and Reggie Jackson have yet to agree upon a deal. It’s known that Jackson wants to be a starter and he has proven in the postseason that he can start alongside of Russell Westbrook, but it seems Scott Brooks is not willing to stick with that rotation.

After Kemba Walker inked a deal for $12 million a year over four years and Bledsoe received $14 million a year over five years, Jackson has some leverage in this extension conversation. The view around the league is that Jackson is on par with these players skill wise and that means he’ll be asking for money in the same ballpark.

The Thunder have had a history of signing their rookies to extensions before the deadline, but they also did have a couple exceptions as told by Darnell Mayberry:

“Oklahoma City historically reaches agreements with players on rookie extensions. Jeff Green and James Harden are the two biggest exceptions. Both were traded before making it to restricted free agency. But in 2009, the Thunder and Thabo Sefolosha came to an 11th hour agreement on an extension that kept him with the franchise through the end of last season.”

Right now, it looks like the Jackson extension is falling under the exception category along with Green and Harden. Hopefully, for OKC’s sake, they can get everything hashed out and keep some great young talent to compliment Durant and Westbrook.
