Ray Allen has high praise for Steph Curry

It’s one thing to get praised by one of your peers but it’s another thing to get praised by one of the best to ever do it. Throughout this season, Steph Curry has been scrutinized a lot by retired players who have said things like, ‘well if he played in our era, he wouldn’t be the same‘. And we’ve heard these things come from some of the best like Oscar Robertson and Isiah Thomas. Although these old generation players have talked down on his career, Steph has not let it phase him. The Warriors have went on to break records and Curry has went on to break records of his own, that being the single season three-pointers made record. One guy that held this record before there was a Steph Curry was a great shooter by the name of Ray Allen.

He was one of the deadliest shooters the game has seen, similar to what Curry is now. In a recent interview with Slam Magazine, Allen goes into detail about comparisons between them two and what Curry is doing for the game:

“Based on what he’s done, I think he has to be—he’s on his way to being the best ever. It’s always arguable, based on who’s telling the story. One thing I always tell people is, it’s hard to compare generations. Everybody has something or somebody that makes him feel special about the game, or the way they saw and the way they appreciate the game. I’ve sat back and watched a lot, and listened to a lot of people talk. He’s creating a lane all of his own. People comparing him to me, to Reggie [Miller]. But I think Steph is in a category of his own. Just being able to have great handles the way he has with the ball, to be able to score at will by getting to the basket. Myself, Reggie Miller, Kyle Korver, Klay Thompson—we play a different game. We’re shooters. We come off screens, pindowns—Steph can do that, but he’s creating a different lane. Point guards haven’t been able to do what he’s been able to do, because he’s mixing that 2 guard-ish in there with having the great handles of a point guard.”

Ray Allen hit the nail on the head with his statement and he couldn’t be anymore right. The way Curry gets his shot off, off the dribble isn’t something the NBA has seen before. Yeah we can sit here and make comparisons all day but none of them really match up. Steph Curry is in a category of his own and that’s what makes him so special. What will be interesting is what kind of longevity he can sustain. When you’re a knock down shooter like these two guys are, your career can extend a few extra years because teams always need shooters especially in today’s game. Ray Allen went on to play 18 years effectively and still played crucial minutes, while winning rings in the latter years of his career. It will be interesting to see if Curry can do the same; granted he remains healthy. Once the quickness and the handles ween down, he can still run off screens and set-up shop for knockdown jumpers.
