Dominating the headlines in the sports world recently, was the launch of LeBron James’ I Promise School in his hometown Akron, OH. James himself has been quoted saying he had first day jitters prior to opening day.

In this episode of the Pump Fake to the Altar podcast, Felix John-Baptiste and DJ Allen reflect on their youthful days in public school in urban communities. DJ himself, was thoroughly impressed with the route James chose to give back to the community:

“Growing up, as an African American kid…the thing that we wanted to do, regardless of how good we were in school, you ask 95% of the young kids out there today, they’re going to tell you either football player, basketball player or rapper. For LeBron James to give back to education and build a school, I think it’s astonishing.”

The students who attend the I Promise School are in for impactful perks. Some of those include free tuition, free uniforms, and free transportation for students that live more than 2 miles away from the facility.

Attending public school in Brooklyn, Felix saw first hand what happened with struggling families. The free perks really hit home for him:

“This shows how LeBron literally attacked the demographic that needed it most. With the free stuff, these are the kids and parents that can’t necessarily afford these things. These are at-risk kids that can grow up with too much idle time on their hands and get into trouble.”
