iPatrick Beverley will miss the remainder of the season for Houston.

Houston Rockets point guard Patrick Beverley looked to stave off season-ending wrist surgery in hopes of returning to the Rockets this year, but the 26-year-old Beverley was forced to undergo surgery on Tuesday morning after it was determined by Houston’s medical staff that the torn ligaments in his left wrist would require surgery to heal properly.

Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports:

After surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist on Tuesday morning, Houston Rockets guard Patrick Beverley will require four months of recovery, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Beverley’s ligament had to be reattached, a procedure that crushed a fleeting hope before the surgery that a two-month recovery period could’ve had Beverley back for the Western Conference Finals – if the Rockets advanced that far.

Rockets coach Kevin McHale stated that Houston using “all of their resources” to fill the void left by Beverley is a necessity as they gear up for what is sure to be an interesting postseason.

“We’ll miss Pat in a lot of different ways,” Rockets coach Kevin McHale told reporters. “He brings a lot of toughness. He’s been really good for us slowing down guys the last couple of years. But we’ll use all the resources we have and figure out what we need to do that night.”

Wojnarowski also reports that Beverley is expected to sport a cast for ten weeks, but he anticipates being full healthy when he hits unrestricted free agency on July 1st. The Rockets remain adamant that they will put forth their best effort to retain the defensive-minded point guard, but other suitors will surely be lined up for Beverley’s services.

While the injury to Beverley doesn’t completely jeopardize Houston’s chances to make a deep playoff run, it weakens not only their defense, but their depth as well. Beverley never served as a primary ball-handler for the Rockets (hey James Harden) but he provided them with exceptional defense, toughness and the ability to knockdown the catch-and-shoot three.

The Rockets have managed to stay afloat with Jason Terry as their starting point guard (Houston is 9-1 with Terry in the starting lineup,) but The Jet doesn’t possess the defensive prowess that made Beverley such a valuable commodity. Dwight Howard’s return to the team makes it easier to cope with the loss of Beverley, but DH12 is still in the midst of regaining his form as he works his way back from a lingering knee injury.

Matt Moore of CBSSports.com (@HPBasketball) tweeted out a few intriguing stats regarding some of the Rockets’ lineups without Beverley, and the numbers were quite surprising:

Moore also recognized Beverley’s effectiveness in catch-and-shoot situations, something that the three-point happy Rockets will miss.

Patrick Beverley averaged 10.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game this season for the Rockets. He played a key part in helping Houston become one of the Western Conference’s best teams this season.
