My Open Letter to DeMarcus Cousins

DeMarcus Cousins

Dear DeMarcus ‘Boogie’ Cousins,

JUST PLAY BALL!!!

Bro, all we ask is that you play ball. You’re such a talented individual but you are letting your emotions get in the way. There’s no problem with having passion, toughness, and anger out on the court but at the same time you can’t let it conflict with what occurs on the basketball court.

We’ve been watching this happen a lot with you. All the technical fouls, tussles and jawing with players and even coaches. But after watching you walk over to Julius Randle last night after blowing a 19-point lead, that was it for me. I’m not sure what you said or if it was just some “UK love” like you claim, regardless the nonsense has to stop.

The technicals, the antics, and all the other non-basketball stuff has to stop. You are too talented and too gifted to be clouding your career with nonsense. I get it, the organization is terrible and your roster isn’t all that great but what you’re failing to see is that you are disrupting your chances with signing or getting traded to any other team.

When your name comes up, even with all the talent that you have you’re going to be labeled as a “problem” and a “cancer in the locker room“. And those are two horrible names to have if you’re looking to move forward with another team. Those labels are exactly what general managers and owners make a habit to stay away from. I get that constantly losing is frustrating but sometimes you have to look in the mirror and ask yourself, “what am I doing to help improve this situation.” You’re at a stagnant position in your career and so is your organization but you have to be a leader and find a way to change everything around you.

I fear for you that years down the road when people say DeMarcus Cousins, all they remember is the hot-headed antics. The charging in the stands, throwing the mouthpiece, not getting along with coaches, and altercations on the court – everything not basketball related. This is a time where you should really think about your legacy. You ARE the best center in the league but when your constantly doing things that take attention away from that then nobody remembers it and no one cares. If you can cage that ‘hot-headedness’ and use that energy towards being a better leader, that could translate into some wins and DeMarcus Cousins could get the real shine that he deserves.

Sincerely,

Frustrated Basketball Fan…
