The NBA awards show is tonight but do we still care?

Today is June 26, 2017. We’re far removed from the end of the NBA regular season which ended on Wednesday, April 12, 2017. We’re also a couple weeks removed from the end of the NBA Finals which ended on Monday June 12, 2017. With that being said, we still have no idea who the winners are of the NBA regular season awards. Tonight the league is premiering their new awards show featuring Drake as the host as they announce all of the winners of the regular season awards. But I wonder do we still even care about the outcome?

The long wait for these announcements sucked the energy out of the anticipation. Every year fans are looking to see who’s going to win. We all have debates, make predictions, and really do our due diligence to see who’s going to come out on top in their respective category. This year nothing was different. If not more this season than any other season, the excitement surrounding the awards were through the roof. With Russell Westbrook having a record-breaking season, James Harden posting high numbers leading his team amongst the top in his conference and Kawhi Leonard being dominant on both sides of the ball, the chatter surrounding the MVP award has been crazy. Even when the finale to the regular season came to an end, the buzz was still astounding on who should take home the award.

However, as time went by and we breezed through the NBA Playoffs and the Finals, that buzz finally wore out. The Finals happened, the Golden State Warriors won a chip, Kevin Durant won Finals MVP, and we haven’t heard a peep about the regular season awards since, which brings me to my point.

Why did we have to wait so long?

Despite not seeing the awards show yet, I don’t believe the idea is bad. But where the league offices dropped the ball was with the timing of it. I believe the awards should’ve happened within two weeks of the end of the regular season. The hype was still there and people cared but I’m not sure if people still care at this moment. Will we watch it? Sure, because we love the game. But do we care as much? No. The wait was too long and the concern and desire to see who wins slowly vanished from our heads. I hope the NBA learns from this because again, I do think it’s a great idea. It just has to happen a lot sooner.
