Central Michigan University junior guard Marcus Keene tore the gym apart today with a record-breaking 50 points to lead the Chippewa’s in a 101-92 victory over Miami-Ohio. Keene has now become the first 50-point scorer in Division I since South Dakota State’s Nate Walters. Keene has also now become the highest scorer in Division I this season surpassing a 47-point performance from Kentucky’s Malik Monk.

I got a chance to witness the 50-point performance in person. From the jump, it was an intense game. With both teams coming in looking to regain control of their conference records a lot of emotions were flowing from both ends. The Chippewas struggled early on in the first half to get into a rhythm. Keene had just 11 points at halftime. He scored 39 of his 50 points in the second half, shot 10-of-15 from the 3-point range, and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. As I stated in a previous article, this guy is the real deal.

I believe it takes a different type of player to put up 40 or 50 points in a single game. Doing it consecutively is outrageous. That’s skill, confidence, hard work, dedication and a zone only that individual player can attest too. Keene was definitely in a zone today. This win for the Chippewa’s was needed and the 50 point performance by the junior certainly helped a lot, keeping the national spotlight on the chips.

Central Michigan University basketball programs have been heating up lately. A couple of weeks ago Central Michigan Women’s Basketball sophomore guard Presley Hudson went off for 43 points in a single game.
