Chicago Bulls power forward Lauri Markkanen is out 6-8 weeks with a high-grade lateral elbow sprain, the team announced.

Markkanen sustained the right elbow injury in practice Wednesday. He underwent an MRI Friday that showed a high-grade lateral elbow sprain.

Markkanen averaged 15.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game during his rookie year last season. He shot 43.4 percent from the field, 36.2 percent from beyond the arc, and 84.3 percent from the free-throw line. The sharpshooter made the All-Rookie first-team.

The Bulls acquired the draft rights to Markkanen in the Jimmy Butler trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the summer of 2017, along with Kris Dunn and Zach LaVine.

This is a big blow to the Bulls. Markkanen is the player the Bulls want to build around for the future and the franchise was expecting him to lead the team to the playoffs this season. Markkanen could return around Thanksgiving.
