As his predecessor, Steve Kerr, received his Red Auerbach Coach of the Year award, Luke Walton knew that he could be interviewing with his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, for their open head coaching position.

On Wednesday night, Kerr informed the media that the Warriors organization gave the Lakers permission to speak with Walton. Michael Lee of The Vertical at Yahoo! Sports was the first to report the story.

The Los Angeles Lakers have requested and received permission to speak with Golden State assistant Luke Walton about their head-coaching position, Warriors Coach Steve Kerr said Wednesday. Kerr added that Walton will speak with the Lakers once the team completes its first-round series with the Houston Rockets.

When it comes to the list of coaches rumored to be interested in the Lakers job, and who the Lakers are interested in hiring for the job, Luke Walton tops the list. The list also includes names like UCONN head coach Kevin Ollie, Jeff Van Gundy, and David Blatt.

With the Lakers roster being as young as they are, they want a young, savvy coach who can create a good relationship with these players. At only age 36, Walton is very liked around the league by many players, and has been a help to the success of the Warriors.

The Lakers will have to offer some good money to get Walton away from such a good situation he is in. Even though it will be tough to steal him away from a guy like Steph Curry, Walton has Los Angeles ties. He went to school at UCLA and was on the Lakers roster during the successful reign of championship during the 2009 and 2010 season.

It will be interesting to see if Walton wants to take the reigns of shaky situation in Los Angeles, but with an organization like the Lakers, it’s only a matter of time before major success comes back.
