Kristaps Porzingis and Dirk Nowitzki

As soon as Kristaps Porzingis entered into the NBA, he was immediately compared to the future Hall of Famer, Dirk Notwitzki. With the size, mobility, shooting, and ability to put the ball on the floor, all of the comparisons make sense. Porzingis had a solid rookie season as he made a lot of people around the NBA aware of who he is. He gained respect from all of the New York fans that booed him during the draft and allotted a huge fan base all across the globe.

But following his big 1st year, what mattered is how he would grow and get better coming into the next year. Kristaps had big hopes on his summer which included learning from the guy that everyone compared him to. Although Porzingis and Nowitzki weren’t able to make that happen this summer, he’s hoping that next summer he can steal a thing or two (via Al Iannazzone of NewsDay):

“Hopefully next summer, I’ll get a chance to work with Dirk and maybe I can learn from him, take a move from him,” Porzingis said. “We tried to do it this summer. It didn’t work out.”

First-year Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek thinks spending time with Nowitzki and emulating him would be a good move.

“We’re hoping that KP can get to that point where we can put him at that elbow and just ride him the whole game,” Hornacek said. “That’s a great guy for him to compare himself to and say, ‘Hey, I can learn from that guy.’ ”

I think that I can speak for all basketball fans across the globe when I say, we too hope that Kristaps Porzingis and Dirk Nowitzki can get in the gym together. The knowledge that he can gain from Dirk is unfathomable and it would only make him better. Porzingis is a dynamic player already but if he can learn some of the little things that Dirk uses to put himself in better positions then the league better watch out.

It’s early but I believe Porzingis has the potential to be better than Dirk Nowitzki. When I watch Kristaps, its seems that he’s a bit tentative at times but that’s expected coming from a guy as young as he is. I believe with him, it’s going to be more mental than physical. He obviously needs to get stronger and add some more moves to his game. But once he grasps that tenacity and killer instinct that every great player has, he will be more of a problem that what he already is.
