If the two sides fail to reach an agreement by Friday, the sharpshooting Thompson will become a restricted free agent next summer.
If Thompson agrees to a contract extension with the Warriors before the deadline, he will join Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, Denver’s Kenneth Faried, Phoenix’s Markieff and Marcus Morris, Orlando’s Nikola Vucevic, and Charlotte’s Kemba Walker as the sixth member of the 2011 NBA Draft to sign a contract extension with their respective team before the deadline.
Thompson, 24, averaged 18.4 points (41.7% 3PT FG,) 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game last year for the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors open their season on Wednesday night against the Sacramento Kings.
