Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson is currently under contract through the 2018-19 season and will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2019 if he doesn’t sign a contract extension this season.

Thompson will make $18.9 million this season and it’s very likely he won’t sign an extension. The All-Star would cost himself close to $86 million if he were to sign an extension this year. If Thompson waits until next summer, he would be looking at a max contract starting around $188 million. If he signs one during the season, though, he would make roughly $102 million.

Thompson has consistently said in the past he wants to retire with the Warriors and the sharpshooter reiterated that this week.

“It’s just how I feel to be honest,” Thompson said, via Nick Friedell of ESPN. “This place, it’s home. I love living in the Bay Area. “It’s awesome. Makes you want to win now, though, that’s for sure. Makes you want to make the most of it. I think we have in the last two years.

“It’s crazy because we are back-to-back champs, but at the same time I feel like we’re all relatively young and we can still get to another level and keep winning. Not just this year, but years beyond. Not a lot of guys can do that with their team. So I love coming to work every day because I realize this is a special group and a special time to be a Warrior.”

Golden State general manager Bob Myers said in July that he’s confident the franchise will be able to afford a roster and luxury tax bill that hits $300 million in the 2019-20 season. The Warriors will open their new arena in San Francisco that season, which will surely bring in more revenue to the organization.

Klay Thompson, 28, has career averages of 19.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 45.8 percent from the field and 42.2 percent from three.
