The Minnesota Timberwolves’ Karl Towns is a rising star in the NBA.

The 2016 NBA Rookie of The Year is a special player because he’s a modern big man that has a solid back to the basket game, a consistent face-up game, a 3-point shot and slick dribble too.

During his rookie year, Towns leaned on now-retired forward Kevin Garnett for his guidance in getting acclimated to the NBA.

“He continuously told me to be patient,” Karl-Anthony Towns told me.

“Being patient on the court, everything will begin to slow down. I mean, just how to be a professional, how to be a professional in this game on and off the court. Just to do my best to lead, and that’s the biggest thing.”

His father, Karl Towns, Sr. is in agreement.

“The best thing that happened to Karl-Anthony Towns was Kevin Garnett,” Karl Towns, Sr. told me on the Scoop B Radio Podcast.

“‘Because Garnett taught Karl how to be a pro.”

High praise from Karl Towns, Sr., who was once an All-County player at Piscataway High School before graduating in 1980. Towns, Sr. would then become one of the nation’s leading rebounders during his collegiate career at Monmouth University.

In 15 seasons as head coach at Piscataway Tech, Karl Towns, Sr. also guided his team to a 2003 Central Jersey, Group 1 championship.

He liked what he saw during his sons rookie year in Minnesota with KG.You need that veteran leadership,” he said.

“When Karl came in there, he just happened to have a guy, 20-year veteran, who was willing to take a young, 19-year-old young man, under his wing and develop him and guide him.”

“To me, Kevin Garnett was the key to Karl’s success right now and they stay close to this day,” he said.

Karl-Anthony Towns and the Minnesota Timberwolves are a young team on the rise with players like Andrew Wiggins and Jimmy Butler headlining the squad alongside Towns. Those formative years next to KG seemed to set the table and they’re still close, according to Karl, Sr. “They always talk, they always break bread,” he said.

“That’s what I think it is- I think if you can get a veteran to take you under your wing, your success level will skyrocket.”
