Name: Jevon Carter

School: West Virginia University

Year:  Senior

Height/Weight: 6’2, 200 lbs

Strengths:

The first thing that stands out about Jevon Carter is his defense. He is the point man in WVU’s “Press Virginia” defensive press scheme and uses his high motor to power a defense that forced opponents into an average of 20 turnovers per game. An NABC defensive player of the year recipient, he is able to guard even the most difficult of match-ups and provide resistance.

Carter is a good athlete that can attack offensively via shot off the dribble or the drive. He hits big shots in big moments and has no problem being an emotional catalyst on either side of the floor. Carter is a willing passer that sees the floor well in full and half court settings. He does not hesitate to attack the basket with power and uses his body to create space for shots around the rim.

Jevon is able to put points up if need be and was the leading scorer of a West Virginia team that reached the sweet 16 last year. Carter’s a workhorse on both ends of the court and is a player any coach would love to have.

Weaknesses:

Having to be the main play-maker was harmful for Jevon Carter as he tends to make questionable decisions at times. Some of his passes can be erratic and his shot selection is questionable especially towards the end of the shot clock. He is a decent ball handler but lacks elite shiftiness to create space in iso situations which contributes to the difficulty level of some of his shots.

Though he hits shots when hot, his mechanics on his jump shots vary and his feet can be all over the place. Once locked into scoring mode he can have slight tunnel vision which leaves assists on the floor. Jevon is more of a two guard that is trapped in the body of a point guard and this may give NBA scouts reason to look over him barring a more mature 2017-2018 campaign from his position as the point guard. He is going to need to bring up his 3.7 assists per game mark from last season.

Future Outlook:

Jevon Carter will enter this season among the most elite defensive players in the country. This will be important as yet again West Virginia will look to turn opponents over at a high rate with their full court press scheme. Jevon himself had an impressive mark of 92 steals last season and his peskiness will certainly land him at the top of many opposing teams’ scouting reports.

Bob Huggins will lean on his senior point guard to set the tone physically and continue to hit big shots as he was the teams leading scorer last year. Carter explored his options professionally this past season before withdrawing his name from the draft and smartly deciding to return for his senior year. NBA scouts will look for him to prove that he can be a point guard at the next level so look for his growth as far as assisting and overall decision-making on offense.

Potential Draft Position:

2nd Round/Undrafted in 2018 NBA Draft
